Whitbread 60 Silk Cut
1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race
Silk Cut, backed by the tobacco brand of the same name, was the British entry in the 1997–98 Whitbread. The campaign maintained the UK’s tradition of competitive offshore racing in the Whitbread, which had featured British entries from the race’s inaugural 1973–74 edition.
The final Whitbread in 1997–98 was a strong fleet by any measure — multiple well-funded campaigns, all built to the same Farr 60 design. The competition was decided by preparation, crew skill, and performance optimisation within a level playing field set by the class rule.
