Whitbread 60 EF Language, EF Education

60’ | Whitbread 60 | 1996
Race Winner — 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race

EF Language, skippered by Paul Cayard, won the 1997–98 Whitbread Round the World Race — the final edition of the event before it was rebranded the Volvo Ocean Race. The EF campaign was backed by Swedish telecommunications and ran two sisterships, EF Language and EF Education, against each other around the world.

EF Education made history as the first all-women crew to complete the Whitbread. Both boats were designed by Bruce Farr & Associates to the strict Whitbread 60 one-design box rule, giving the race its most competitive era. EF Language’s victory in 1997–98 was Farr’s last Whitbread win before the class was retired.
