Volvo Open 70 Telefonica Blue

70’ | Volvo Open 70 | 2007
2008–09 Volvo Ocean Race

Telefonica Blue, skippered by Bouwe Bekking, was one of two Spanish Telefonica entries in the 2008–09 Volvo Ocean Race — a campaign that reflected Spain’s growing dominance of the event that would reach its peak in that edition. The Open 70 class had replaced the earlier 60-foot class and allowed more design freedom within the performance box rule.

Bekking is one of the most experienced Volvo Ocean Race sailors in history, and Telefonica Blue’s campaign was run with the professionalism that characterised the Spanish offshore racing programmes of that era. The boat represented the second generation of Farr designs for the Volvo race, as the Open 70 pushed performance well beyond what the earlier 60-foot class had achieved.
