Volvo Ocean 60 Illbruck Challenge

60’ | Volvo Ocean 60 | 2000
Race Winner — 2001–02 Volvo Ocean Race

illbruck Challenge, skippered by John Kostecki, won the inaugural Volvo Ocean Race in 2001–02 — the first edition of the race under its new name following the end of the Whitbread era. The German adhesive manufacturer’s campaign was consistently fast across all legs, and Kostecki’s tactical skill proved decisive in the closest race in years.

The win marked Farr Yacht Design’s first Volvo Ocean Race victory and reaffirmed the firm’s position at the top of offshore racing design. illbruck was the most technically prepared boat in the fleet, and Kostecki, the American sailor who had built his reputation in match racing, translated that preparation into a commanding overall victory.
